coast; his rebellious crew assassinated him and buried him in the wilderness between the Texas coast and
the Mississippi River.
Marguette and Joliet-1673: explored Misissippi River; were sent by the French governor of Canada to
find the Mississippi River; they returned with descriptions of the river’s trading potential and strategic
