The salt mountains of Iran look like they were plucked from another world

The salt mountains of Iran look like they were plucked from another world. These geological formations, known as salt domes or “diapirs,” are true natural wonders that have formed over millions of years under the pressure of tectonic layers. Located mainly in the south of the country—in places such as Qeshm Island and Bushehr Province—these mountains display striking colors due to mixtures of minerals like gypsum, iron oxides, and clays.

What’s most amazing is that some of these mountains have underground brine rivers flowing through their cracks, creating surreal landscapes. Moreover, their constant evolution — driven by the dissolution and crystallization of salt — gives them an ever-changing appearance. Undoubtedly, a natural spectacle that demonstrates the incredible geological diversity of our planet.
