Antarctica Just Gained Ice — But There’s More to the Story

For the first time in decades, scientists have recorded a net ice gain in Antarctica — about 108 billion tons per year between 2021 and 2023, according to recent satellite data (NASA’s GRACE and GRACE-FO missions).

This short-term increase is mainly due to unusually heavy snowfall in parts of East Antarctica, where colder conditions allowed snow to accumulate faster than usual.

But experts are clear: this doesn’t mean Antarctica is “recovering.”
🔹 Over the past two decades, the continent has still lost an average of 150 billion tons of ice per year, driving global sea-level rise.
🔹 The recent growth is part of natural climate variability — not a reversal of long-term warming trends.

In short: the climate system is complex and dynamic. 🌬️
While short-term surprises happen, the big picture remains — Antarctica is still melting overall, and climate change continues to reshape our planet. 🌍
