Europe in the year 301 BC

The year is 300 B.C. In the East, Alexander the Great's empire has recently collapsed, and his generals, the Diadochi, have seized power and divided his empire among themselves: Ptolemy in Egypt, Antigonus in Asia Minor and Syria, Seleucus in the eastern satrapies, Cassander in Macedon, and Lysimachus in Thrace.

In Italy, the Romans have recently defeated the Samnites in the Second Samnite War, gaining control over part of the eastern coast of Italy. Moving north, the Etruscans are in decline and will soon be annexed by the rapidly expanding Roman Republic.

In North Africa, the Carthaginians rule over a vast trading empire with a great navy. There are no major kingdoms in Hispania, Gaul, or Britain yet—these regions are divided among many tribes, most of them Celtic.

In the cold north, the Germanic tribes are beginning to migrate south and replace the Gallic tribes that inhabit Germania.

The Greeks have colonized southern Italy, the coast of Hispania, and the Bosporus: Greek city-states dominate these areas.
