Vegetation zones of Ghana

Ghana has six main vegetation zones, each reflecting the country’s climatic and ecological diversity. Here’s a brief overview of each:

  • 🌳 Tropical Rainforest – Found mainly in the southwestern part of Ghana (e.g., around areas like Sefwi and Enchi). It receives heavy rainfall and has dense vegetation with tall evergreen trees such as mahogany and wawa.
  • 🌿 Moist Semi-Deciduous Forest – Lies between the rainforest and savannah zones. It has both evergreen and deciduous trees (those that shed leaves seasonally). This zone supports timber production and cocoa farming.
  • 🌾 Coastal Scrub and Grassland (Coastal Savannah) – Found along the southern coast, especially around Accra. The vegetation includes grasses, shrubs, and scattered trees, adapted to the drier coastal climate.
  • 🌴 Strand and Mangrove Vegetation – Found along the coast and estuaries, especially near lagoons and river mouths (e.g., Densu Delta, Keta Lagoon). It includes mangrove forests that protect shorelines and support aquatic life.
  • 🌻 Guinea Savannah – Covers northern and parts of central Ghana. It consists of tall grasses mixed with widely spaced trees like baobab and shea. It’s the largest vegetation zone and supports farming and livestock.
  • 🌾 Sudan Savannah – Found in the extreme northeast (Upper East Region). It has shorter grasses and fewer trees due to the drier climate, marking a transition toward Sahelian vegetation.
