In 1135, the Crusader states were a group of Latin Christian kingdoms in the Levant, including the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the County of Tripoli, the Principality of Antioch, and the County of Edessa. At this time, the Crusader reconquest of the Levant was at its peak, but they faced constant threats from powerful Muslim states, such as the Fatimid Caliphate to the south and the Seljuk Turks to the east. The Kingdom of Jerusalem was the strongest of the four, while the County of Edessa was the most vulnerable and located furthest inland.
