The Continental Congress sent James Willing, a former Natchez resident, on an expedition in 1778 down the Mississippi River to Natchez to encourage the citizens to join the American cause again England. Willing found many Loyalists and arrested several, confiscated their property, and took them as prisoners to New Orleans. He was ordered to leave because Spain (who controlled New Orleans at this time) was not at war with England and did not want trouble.

De Soto-1541: reached Mississippi River; his exploration was the beginning of the European or colonial period of American history; was governor of Cuba in 1539 when he began the expedition to explore the mainland of North America; marched through Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas;found no treasure; died and was buried in the Mississippi River. 
La Salle-1682: French expedition he led reached mouth of Mississippi River; planted flag claiming river and its lands property of King Louis XIV of France; on a second expedition he landed on the Texas coast; his rebellious crew assassinated him and buried him in the wilderness between the Texas coast and the Mississippi River.
Marguette and Joliet-1673: explored Misissippi River; were sent by the French governor of Canada to find the Mississippi River; they returned with descriptions of the river’s trading potential and strategic position.
